Thanks to Permaneo HGV maintenance at an Avonmouth fire station is no longer disrupted by uneven, cracking floor slabs. Allowing vehicles to be repaired and ready to aid life-saving responses to the surrounding communities.
Avon fire and rescue provide protection and emergency services to five of the surrounding communities. Covering core functions such as prevention, protecting and responding to a range of activities including road traffic, fires, flooring and chemical spills.
However, the floor at one of their HGV maintenance areas had been susceptible to cracking, due to the movement of two slabs at different levels; also causing a trip hazard.
The client was looking for ways to reinstate load transfer across the joint of two existing slabs, whilst armouring the movement of the joint. So, in November 2019 Permaneo were commissioned to carry out bespoke design and specialist repair.
Bespoke design and repair
Permaneo begun by attending two site meetings to evaluate the requirements and expectations of the client and the repair. The area identified as needing work (pictured right) required a bespoke design and repair based on the existing floor to incorporate the two moving slabs.
The detailed plan provided by Permaneo ensured disruption to daily activities were kept to a minimum. The works were scheduled to take just over a week.
AlphaJoint Classic joint repairs
The damaged slabs were repaired using 17 lm of AlphaJoint Classic 4010. Allowing efficient load transfer between adjacent concrete slabs and control horizontal slab movement, preventing any future random cracking.
The damaged concrete around the joint was firstly cut to full depth, this was then cleared allowing the subbase to be prepared, inserting dowels every 400mm and a double layer of mesh accordingly. The AlphaJoint armoured joint rail was firmly fixed flush to the surface. Concrete was poured to secure the joint and two slabs.
Rocland dry shake
Finally, 10mm Rocland Dry Shake, manufactured by RCR Flooring Products, was used to match existing floor colour. Permaneo had previously advised that using the dry shake as a slurry would give a better colour finish and durability.
Operations since repair
Permaneo returned to the job site 2 months after handover to find the floor is in full use with no cracking or delamination.
